Supported platforms

macOS 15 or later / iOS 17 or later (iPhone). As long as both devices are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID, your data syncs automatically.

Getting started

1. Import your diary (if you already keep one)

Export your diary from your blog in Movable Type format. On macOS, use “Import Diary Data” in the File menu; on iOS, use “Import Diary Data” in the “⋯” menu. The “diary name” you give it on import lets you tell your sources apart. For the file format and the list of supported tools, see the Data migration guide.

2. Search and re-read

Type a keyword into the search field (on macOS, ⌘F also moves focus there). AND / OR / parenthesis expressions are supported (on macOS, also in the Advanced Search window, ⌘⇧F).

3. Line up the same date across the years

Pick a month and day, and the entries you wrote on that date line up from the oldest year to the newest. On macOS each row also shows the previous and next day of the same year; on iOS you move by swiping up/down and left/right.

4. Back up and take it with you

On macOS use the File menu, on iOS use “Export in Movable Type format” in the “⋯” menu, to save your data as a Movable Type text file. We recommend exporting regularly.

5. Sync between Mac and iPhone

As long as both devices are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID, anything you add or edit is reflected automatically on the other device.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Where is my diary data stored?

It is stored on your device (Core Data) and synced between your Apple devices through iCloud (CloudKit). Your data is never sent to Nashua Works or to any third-party server.

Q. Is my data shared between the macOS and iOS versions?

Yes. As long as you are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID, it syncs automatically. Sync can take a little while; if so, restarting the app will bring it up to date.

Q. Can I import data from an older blog or setup?

Yes, if it can produce Movable Type format (many blog tools support this export). Diary apps such as Day One, and Evernote, cannot export Movable Type format, so they cannot be imported as is. The steps, the file format, and what to do when it does not work are all covered in the Data migration guide (Movable Type format).

Q. Can I move my data to another app?

On both macOS and iOS you can export all of your data in Movable Type format. Your record stays in your own hands, never locked to one service.

Q. I deleted an entry by mistake and want it back.

Deleting an entry does not remove it immediately. You can review and restore it any time from “Deleted Entries” on macOS.

Q. The age shown for an entry is not my current age.

The age is calculated from the birthdate you entered in Settings and the date of that entry — it is how old you were at the time, not now. That is why the same month and day can show a different age in different years.

Q. What is a “diary name”?

It is a label that tells your imported sources apart. You can use it to filter the list and to delete a whole source at once (rename is macOS only). If you re-import the same original data, using the same diary name lets the duplicate check work.

Q. I don’t want to sync through iCloud.

Open Settings > your Apple ID > iCloud on your device and turn off sync for this app. With sync off, that data stays only on that device.
